Edubuntu package selection sucks

2005-12-07

Just wandering around in Ubuntu wiki, and found some interesting things:

  • Both Geg (a graph plotter) and NumExp (a symbolic mathematical calculator, akin MatLab or Mathematica) are rejected. Reason? OpenOffice can edit Equations! It isn’t before now that I know geg and gnumexp are merely equation editors! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
  • Denemo, a music score editor, can replace Rosegarden, which is a music syntheziser with score editing mode. I absolutely wouldn’t think the one in rosegarden is a full fledged music score editor.
  • ……………
  • ……

This shows clear lack of understanding of applications from decision maker before even accepting or rejecting packages. It looks like they look at the title, and say “Ah, this keyword in this title duplicates with that one”, without even bothering to try.

But this isn’t ground breaking news though. From my experience, no distributions have any carefully considered and refined process for package selection. E.g. Mandriva is still including xxgdb, a “GUI” debugger written 100000 years ago, in its main repository, and nobody bothers to notice it; while many worthy applications stays forever as contribution, again because nobody bother to discuss.
