Domain registrar price war

2005-12-22

It looks like domain registration is getting cheaper and cheaper. A few years ago, Godaddy was the clear winner by offering a price of less than US$10 per year, while one have to pay several folds of this price for the expensive ones (e.g. register.com still wants US$35 per year right now). Indeed, this price reduction comes with condition: you have to use your own DNS setting if you don’t use its domain parking.

But right now the domain price dropped even more, e.g. Yahoo is offering US$3 per year, despite the fact that ICANN is charging for even more. Again, I have to pay something for the price reduction: the DNS admin interface for Yahoo is simply stupid — one can’t remove CNAME record[1]! This is one of the funniest “feature” I’ve ever seen for years.

Yet no registrar can compare with Hong Kong one:

  • US$25.5 for third level domains, and US$32 for second level domains.
  • No DNS setting, please provide DNS server yourself.
  • Please provide government document proof if you want any domain except individual (.idv.hk) ones. For example, company registration record is needed for .com.hk, and non-profit organization registration record for .org.hk.
  • Rumored to be run by amateurish university students (from CUHK?).

Not many registrars can compete against this “Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Ltd.” for the title of Most Crappy Registrar Award.

[1] For those who don’t know, CNAME record in DNS is for setting host name aliases, say www1.xyz.com is an alias for www.xyz.com.
